KUALA LUMPUR: Many parents and students are very disappointed at the Cabinet’s decision to reverse the Teaching of Science and Mathematics policy.
Said mother of three Kam Swee Har: “Language is not just about teaching grammar and writing essays; it is the whole application of the language.
“The exposure is different when you’re learning technical subjects like Science or Maths.”
Engineer and father of four, Sulaiman Mahran, agreed: “Technical terms need to be absorbed in English, so strengthening English in general is not going to help in Maths and Science.”
Azra Banu, who has a child in Year Six, pointed out that it is the rural students who will lose out in the long run.
Businesswoman Haili Abdul Jamil, who has two children in Years One and Two, is seriously considering enrolling her children in an international school following the decision.
The impact of the decision is particularly hard on students who will enter Form Four in 2012.
Form One student Anisa Sulaiman is anxious about switching to Bahasa Malaysia in the two subjects when she gets into Form Four in 2012.
“I have been learning Maths and Science in English, so it will be difficult if we change the medium of instruction later on,” she said.
In Penang, Han Chiang High School Just English centre adviser Ooi Lay Le said the standard of English among students would drop if the two subjects were not taught in the language.
“We are going backwards,” said Ooi who has been teaching for 40 years.
SJK (C) Union Bahasa Malaysia Committee head Cheah Choo Suan, 55, said teaching the subjects in English would have helped broaden students’ knowledge of new terminologies and improve their command of the language.
Year Five student R. Abirami, 11, from SK Convent Green Lane, said it would be hard for her to adapt to the new system.
“We have memorised the scientific terms in English,” she said. “I’m afraid it will be hard to re-learn them in Bahasa Malaysia.”
In Johor, some parents are even considering sending their children to Singapore where they can learn in English.
Dr Santhi Sivalingam Moorthy, 41, said she would seriously consider transferring her three children, aged between five and 10, to Singapore schools now.

Yang membuat kajian tu, dia ada tak buat survey pada ibubapa yang anak2 mereka bersekolah lagi di sekolah sekolah kerajaan ni? Yang membuat kajian tu plak, dah tua, anak2 dah lepas, cucu2 sekolah kat sekolah antarabangsa...woi..kami ni rakyat biasa tak mampu nak hantar anak2 ke sekolah antarabangsa tapi masih mahu anak2 kami belajar dalam medium bahasa inggeris, tapi kenapa tak tanya kami dulu? yang nak sekolah tu kan anak2 kami?

our politician kan masing2 nak tunjuk kuasa,bukan nak jaga kesejahteraan rakyat...

Bukan kata kita aje yang rasa tak puas hati, murid yang terlibat secara langsung pun tak puas hati.Tulah kalau punya pemimpin bodoh sombong...nak bagi ingatlah kalau nak berpolitik pun janganlah bodohkan rakyat.Adakan semula sekolah aliran Inggeris kita tenguk siapa yang bodoh? Sorry bahasa kurang sikit sebab marah sangat ni....
klu gomen bt smua ni sbb kesian kat student luar bandar yg x dpt cope ngn Etems..mmg merosakkan anak bngsa je..gomen da bg macam2 kemudahan and hantar best teacher utk ngaja bdak2 luar bndr..tp x gak improve..bkan slah teacher..tp studnt sendri yg xda self-awareness tntg pentingnya blaja BI..kalau org tanak, bt pe la susah2 nk push dorg kn..biarkan je la dorang mundur dlm dunia dorang sendiri..kesian pd student len yg btol2 excellent..jgn kerana nila setitik, rosak susu sebelanga..

ReplyDeleteSorry ya, bukan maksud mami nak menghukum semua cikgu2 tapi ada cikgu2 yang lemah dalam BI ni, pengalaman anak2 mami sendiri semasa bersekolah di kampong mami di Muar. Dan juga mmg ada anak2 murid yang tak pandai2. Lumrah dunia mmg begitu tak semua pandaikan. Mami setuju ngan zack self awareness tu penting.. mami tau Zack bercita2 nak jadi cikgu, teruskan cita2 murni tu, moga Zack jadi cikgu yang berdedikasi untuk memajukan anak bangsa ye...
tapi mami nak salahkan juga pejuang bahasa ni, dorang nilah yang kata PPSMI ni menyusahkan golongan cendekiawan termasuk cikgu2...tapi menurut kajian, cikgu2 dah ok, ibu bapa nakkan PPSMI...so...saper yang taknak nih? in fact budak2 sekolah pun nakkan PPSMI ni diteruskan...
hanya satu kemungkinan, semua benda nak dipolitikkan di malaysia ni...kesian orang2 melayu terutama sekali anak2 dan cucu2 kita nanti...
ppsmi dah ok.melayu yg merosakkan bangsa melayu itu sendiri.pejuang bangsa konon.semua masih berotak kampong.tq
