Assalamualaikum wbt & Salam Tahun Baru

Nik Aziz enggan keluar fatwa
Oleh AZRAN FITRI RAHIM
azran.rahim@utusan.com.my
Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (tiga dari kiri) bersama Pengerusi DAP Perak, Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham dan Setiausahanya, Nga Kor Ming (kanan) memegang lilin ketika bertafakur pada majlis memperingati kematian Setiausaha Politik Exco Selangor, Teoh Beng Hock di Ipoh, Perak, baru-baru ini.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KOTA BHARU 22 Julai - Mursyidul Am Pas, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat enggan menjawab cabaran daripada Menteri Besar Perak, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir supaya mengeluarkan fatwa berhubung tindakan Timbalan Pesuruhjaya Pas Perak, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin menyertai majlis menyalakan lilin di Ipoh, Jumaat lalu.
InsyaAllah. Ameen.

- AFP

Parents unhappy over decision to revert
KUALA LUMPUR: Many parents and students are very disappointed at the Cabinet’s decision to reverse the Teaching of Science and Mathematics policy.
Said mother of three Kam Swee Har: “Language is not just about teaching grammar and writing essays; it is the whole application of the language.
“The exposure is different when you’re learning technical subjects like Science or Maths.”
Engineer and father of four, Sulaiman Mahran, agreed: “Technical terms need to be absorbed in English, so strengthening English in general is not going to help in Maths and Science.”
Azra Banu, who has a child in Year Six, pointed out that it is the rural students who will lose out in the long run.
Businesswoman Haili Abdul Jamil, who has two children in Years One and Two, is seriously considering enrolling her children in an international school following the decision.
The impact of the decision is particularly hard on students who will enter Form Four in 2012.
Form One student Anisa Sulaiman is anxious about switching to Bahasa Malaysia in the two subjects when she gets into Form Four in 2012.
“I have been learning Maths and Science in English, so it will be difficult if we change the medium of instruction later on,” she said.
In Penang, Han Chiang High School Just English centre adviser Ooi Lay Le said the standard of English among students would drop if the two subjects were not taught in the language.
“We are going backwards,” said Ooi who has been teaching for 40 years.
SJK (C) Union Bahasa Malaysia Committee head Cheah Choo Suan, 55, said teaching the subjects in English would have helped broaden students’ knowledge of new terminologies and improve their command of the language.
Year Five student R. Abirami, 11, from SK Convent Green Lane, said it would be hard for her to adapt to the new system.
“We have memorised the scientific terms in English,” she said. “I’m afraid it will be hard to re-learn them in Bahasa Malaysia.”
In Johor, some parents are even considering sending their children to Singapore where they can learn in English.
Dr Santhi Sivalingam Moorthy, 41, said she would seriously consider transferring her three children, aged between five and 10, to Singapore schools now.
It’s saddening, says Mahathir
PUTRAJAYA: The future of our schoolchildren will be compromised with the Government reversing the teaching of Science and Mathematics from English to Bahasa Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.
Dr Mahathir, who was behind the original policy of teaching both subjects in English, said his intention was to ensure that Malaysians were able to face global challenges at the earliest opportunity.
Expressing sadness on the policy reversal, he said schoolchildren would find it difficult to know more about the developments in the field of Science.
“These matters, of course, cannot be resolved overnight. But it’s the Government’s responsibility to train and supply capable teachers. I’m confident that our teachers will be able to study and teach in English,” he told reporters at his Perdana Leadership Foundation office yesterday.
Dr Mahathir said it was good that more teachers would be trained in English.
“But if we can train teachers to learn English, why can’t we do the same by training them to learn and teach Science and Mathematics in English?,” the former Prime Minister asked.
Dr Mahathir also questioned why no one protested when the medium of teaching in English in the colonial times was changed to Bahasa Malaysia.
“And at that time, not many teachers knew the national language. Now, it’s all right if we mix a little bit of Malay and English, but at the same time we need to improve the ability of our teachers too,” he added.
On his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is the Education Minister, before the new policy was announced, Dr Mahathir said he was only given a briefing.

How to Dance in the Rain
'Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.
It was a busy morning, about 8:30 , when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived at the hospital to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.
I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.
He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?'
He smiled
As he patted my hand and said,
'She doesn't know me,
But I still know who she is.'
I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,
'That is the kind of love
I want in my life.'
True love is neither
Physical, nor romantic.
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

Diamond & Kehidupan
Diamond Rough
How a diamond is formed?
Diamonds were formed in the earth thousands of years ago under extreme heat and pressure. This extreme heat and pressure in the earth transformed the carbon into crystals and turned it colorless. Although diamonds formed deep in the earth, volcanic activity is what brought them to the surface. Hence, these volcanic pipes have diamonds in them. Over time, as some other minerals mix with carbon the diamond may takes on color. Most diamonds have some hint of yellow or brown in them. Others that did not mix with minerals are colorless. Some diamonds undergo dramatic changes to vivid or unique colors. These are very rare and valued more than normal diamonds.
Where are diamonds mined?
Alluvial deposits on riverbanks in India, and then Brazil, were mined to supply Europe through the 1700s. Alluvial diamonds were found in Africa in the late 1800s. An alluvial deposit is a buildup of alluvium, or sediment. Diamonds in volcanic pipes were first located in Kimberley South Africa in 1869. Over the next century thousands of thus-named “kimberlite” pipes were developed in Africa and Russia. In 1976 a diamond-bearing lamproite pipe was found in Australia (the Argyle mine) and in the 1990s the Ekati kimberlite was found under a Canadian lake, which has led to the location of other diamondiferous fields in Canada. Today the most significant diamond producers are Africa, Russia, Australia and Canada. Asia and South America are also commercially important. Alluvial diamonds are mined in riverbed, coastal and deep sea operations and hard rock diamonds are mined using an open pit or underground process.
How diamonds are priced?
Diamonds are valued by their Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight. You should remember the C's that are used to value diamonds. Cut, Color, and Clarity are used to measure the quality of the diamond and the final C, which is Carat, is used to measure the size of the diamond. Man creates cut in a diamond and the other C's are formed in nature. Smart shoppers will also keep another C in mind: Confirmation, which depends on what the manufacturer and seller offer.
What types of diamonds are there?
When minerals mix with diamond in nature, it gives the diamond color. Based on the type of mineral that is mixed, we can classify the diamonds. The following are colors that are found.
Yellow: this color is formed when Nitrogen combines with diamond crystals.
Brown: Dislocation in the lattice of atoms causes brown coloring.
Blue: During the formation of the diamond if elements of Boron are mixed then the diamond may take on blue coloring.
Green: Green is caused due to a missing atom in the lattice of atoms.
Pink: Dislocations in the lattice, missing atoms and some impurities that are non-nitrogen cause pink color.
Mami - Part 12

Dr. M: Don't forsake English and ruin children's future

Dr M: Don’t forsake English and ruin children’s future
PUTRAJAYA: Parents should think about the future of their children when deciding whether to agree or to oppose the Government’s proposal to make a pass in English compulsory for a student to pass the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said, English was a necessary component for students to get good jobs once they leave school or for them to go overseas for further education nowadays.
He said that when commenting on Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement that the ministry was mulling the possibility of making English a compulsory subject for passing SPM.
He said if parents continued to reject the importance of the English language in their children’s education, then the future of the country would be at stake.
He also slammed those who oppose the move saying that these people were less concerned about education than politics.
“It is more like politics than education. They are not interested in education or acquiring knowledge. All they want to see is how many votes they can win. So I am afraid the country will go to the dogs,” he told reporters after being conferred a honorary Doctorate of Humanity by the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology yesterday.
Asked about the possibility that the policy on the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English would be scrapped Dr Mahathir said: “I feel very sorry. In future, all Malays and Malaysians will be stupid.”
Earlier, he received the honorary doctorate from university president Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing.
